The daughter of a friend put up a yurt on May 13, 2011, and I got to help!
Paul Desrochers, owner of White Mountain Yurts,
was there to do the majority of the work.
A small crew of us attempted to help.
Tara is the proud owner of this beautiful 30' yurt
now residing in a meadow in Locke, NY.

WHAT MAKES A YURT SO STRONG?

The yurt roof incorporates a unique architectural design. Roof poles or rafters meet in a center ring, where gravity produces an inward and downward pressure. The center ring holds the rafters in a state of compression. Where the rafters meet the wall at the perimeter, a natural outward thrust occurs. A band (of rope, woven cloth or wire cable) at the top of the wall integrates the wall and roof structure and holds the roof poles or rafters in tension against this outward pressure.
Yurts flex only slightly in strong winds. Wind currents normally flow around and over the yurt with very little disturbance.
Snow loads don't have a chance to build up. The roof angle allows snow weight to slide off before it becomes too heavy. Interior heat hastens the process.
